Nilmini De Silva, Artist in her Studio (November theme: Portrait)

I came to know Josie during my artist residency on FLOAT, a unique floating art studio on Lake Tyers, East Gippsland. The image was taken in her wonderful cob art studio where she can often be found immersed in her art. Her mixed media arts installation practice is inspired by her love for the Lake Tyers estuary—a stone’s throw away—together with her passion for ecology, and her skill in drawing, sewing and installing innovative creations. I loved interacting with Josie and learning about her work. Her artwork starts through an immersion process. The linen cloth she has embroidered on, was left to soak in the lake for a month so it could absorb the life of the lake and record what it had to say.
