Spyros Stasi, A ride through cat town (LIGHT/SHADOW - Entries close 30 September 2026)

Captured while walking through the quieter residential streets of Tokyo, this photograph records a fleeting everyday moment as a cyclist passes through the narrow streets of Yanaka. I was drawn to the way the road markings lead towards the cyclist and how the surrounding powerlines, signage and tightly packed architecture frame the scene. The image was captured spontaneously using a compact CHUZHAO digital TLR-style camera. Its simplicity suited the way I wanted to photograph Tokyo — intuitively and without overthinking the technical process. In post-production, I converted the image to black and white and adjusted exposure, contrast and tonal balance to emphasise the textures, atmosphere and graphic qualities of the streetscape.
