May Thu Aung, 2028-1500 (B&W 2023)
2028-1500 aims to reflect on relationships and people that I’ve intentionally or unintentionally let go of. I do not only mean romantic relationships but also platonic and family oriented. The art of letting go is a broad spectrum. It can be relieving, lovely, bittersweet, satisfying, overwhelming or underwhelming. Fabric was used to mimic a human body’s skin, which can symbolize various aspects of relationships such as intimacy, vulnerability, communication and boundaries. Fabric is also used to enhance my model’s facial expressions like despair and emptiness, which is common when growing apart from people you love. The series is edited into black and white, not to erase the joy and impact of the narrative, but to rather intensify the subtle details in expression, light and shadow. By viewing the photos through a monochromatic lens, I hope the viewers are able to evoke emotions and thoughts without the distraction of colors.
