Who won Australian Photography + digital’s November ‘Shadows and Silhouettes’ Your Best Shot photo competition?
Joy Kachina has won Australian Photography + digital magazine's ’Shadows and Silhouettes’ photo competition with a surreal photo of her husband walking along a windswept beach towards the sun.
“The wind was howling and the sand was flowing like a river around my feet. As my husband walked into the setting sun I saw this shot and quickly captured two exposures. Later I stitched the images together in Photoshop. The challenge was shooting directly into the sun, but I was able to retain detail in the highlights and capture the movement of the sand. My camera needed to be sent away for a service after this shoot!”
Australian Photography + digital editor Robert Keeley praised Kachina for her creative vision and technical skill: “This is certainly a brave effort, but it’s even more meritorious because it works. You seem to have avoided lens flare (we wondered how much, if any, post-production work was employed), and that curved horizon must have been tricky to match up in stitching. But there’s no doubt the overall impact is impressive and almost haunting. Good pictures have to create a strong response, and yours does. Well done on your selection as our winner!”
Kachina has won an Epson Stylus Photo R2000 valued at $1099 courtesy of Epson Australia. Two other photographers were highly commended in the monthly competition, William Patino and Bruce McDonald.
The monthly Your Best Shot photo competition is open to subscribers of Australian Photography + digital magazine and members of the Australian Photographic Society (APS).
