Winners and finalists announced for Nikon Surf Photo and Video of the Year

The winners and top 20 finalists for the Nikon Surf Photo & Video of the Year 2018 have been announced, with Trent Mitchell named overall winner with his image "Tessellated Seas".

The winning image is a part of Trent’s “Tessellated Seas” collection which he worked on between 2013 - 2018.

The Nikon Surf Photo of the Year award, in partnership with Surfing Australia, offered the opportunity for surf photographers of all levels to have their work recognized and celebrated. The competition recognizes the best single surfing-themed image taken by an Australian in 2017.

Although entrants need to be Australian residents, photos can be taken anywhere around the world, ranging from action, lifestyle/portrait, or scenic images.

The jury panel judged on the following criteria: innovation and creativity, dramatic affect and sensory impact, uniqueness and the overall composition.

Three finalists were also announced for the Surf Video of the Year award, Maurice Cole by Peter Baker, The big wave project by Tim Bonython, and the Church of the Open Sky by Nathan Oldfield, with Tim Bonython winning the overall award . The trio were judged by a panel of judges from within the surfing industry, including Nikon’s partner in the project – Surfing Australia.
