Oli Sansom has been named overall winner in Capture magazine's 2014 Australia’s Top Emerging Photographers awards. Sansom, who is based in Melbourne, only picked up a DSLR for the first time four years ago and describes himself as an, "illustrator turned designer turned photo maker."

Australia’s Top Emerging Photographers awards recognise outstanding work by up-and-coming photographers across nine categories including Advertising, Architecture, Documentary/Photojournalism, Editorial/Fashion, Landscape, Portrait, Sport and Wedding, with an additional category for student photographers.

As well as being named overall winner, Sansom also won the portrait category and was a finalist in the Wedding and Documentary/Photojournalism categories.

Now in its sixth year, the competition attracted a record 4,600 images from around 460 emerging photographers. The competition is open to photographers with less than four years' full-time professional experience (excluding time spent as a photographer’s assistant), and asks entrants to submit a portfolio of six images in one or more of the nine categories. The competition was judged by a panel of 51 of Australia's leading photographers and industry professionals .

The prize pool this year totalled $7,500 with the top prize of a Fujifilm X-E2 and XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 lens valued at $1,899 from major sponsor, Fujifilm Australia.

Category prizes were also provided by: 123RF, BenQ, CATC Design School, Momento Pro, National Portrait Gallery, Sally Brownbill, Sun Studios, Ted’s Cameras and Zenfolio.

Category winners and runners up are revealed in the current issue of Capture (May/June 2014) which is available in newsstands and via subscription now. The magazine is also available on iPad, and includes extra content including the full portfolios of winners and runners up, and extended coverage of the finalists' work.
