Sony has announced a new W series Cyber-shot camera, the WX30, that captures 16.2 megapixel still photos, Full HD 1080i video, and 3D stills.
It is also the first ever W series model that features a 7.5cm (3”) Xtra Fine LCD wide touch screen for simple fingertip operation.
In 3D mode the camera grabs two images in quick succession, estimating depth information to create a three-dimensional still image. Real-time Picture Effects include HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Camera, Partial Colour, Pop Colour and Soft High-key.
The camera also features “By Pixel Super Resolution” technology, which Sony says “boosts zoom range to 10x without quality loss at the image sensor’s maximum resolution (16.2 million pixels).” We’re treating that claim with some skepticism as normally an increase in zoom can only be achieved by interpolating pixels (which diminishes picture quality) or reducing resolution (which reduces image size). We’ll know more when the camera is released in September 2011.
It will be available in black, silver, and violet.
