Sony has announced details of the Cyber-shot RX1R, its second full-frame compact camera. The new model is almost identical to last year's RX1, though with one key difference – the new model does not use an optical low-pass filter. In theory, this should produce sharper images, though the camera is also likely to be more susceptible to moiré effects.

Introduced in September 2012, the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 was the world’s first compact fixed-lens camera to feature a 35mm full-frame 24.3 effective megapixel sensor.

Like the RX1, the RX1R features a fixed 35mm f/2 lens with eight elements in seven groups. Other key specs include a fixed 3-inch (75mm) 1,229,000-dot LCD, Full HD video (1920 x 1080) at a choice of frame rates including 60, 50, 25 or 24fps, built-in flash (guide number 6m at 100ISO) and an optional electronic and optical viewfinder.

The Cyber-shot RX1R will be available in Australia from mid July 2013 with a retail price of $2999.
