New website aims to catalogue every film camera ever made
A new website is taking on an ambitious challenge: creating a searchable, living archive of every film camera ever produced.
The PPP Camera Index is the brainchild of camera repairer and PPP Cameras founder Pierro Pozella, who is building a free online resource bringing together information about cameras, specifications, manuals, images and their place in photographic history.
The project is currently working alphabetically through camera manufacturers, with brands including Agfa, Alpa, Ansco and Argus already represented.
More cameras are being added each week, with popular models and major manufacturers being documented first before the archive moves further into the more obscure corners of photographic history.
Pozella says the idea grew from his experience repairing cameras and seeing how easily technical knowledge can disappear.
"As a camera repairer first and foremost, I’m aware of what happens when knowledge isn’t recorded – and the gaps that occur," he told Kosmo Foto.
"I therefore felt strongly that information should be compiled and made accessible, as this is what will fundamentally keep analog cameras alive well into the future."
That is also at the heart of PPP Cameras' mission: to preserve information about film cameras before it becomes increasingly difficult to find.
"Am I mad? Yes. But this has always been a dream of mine, and being completely camera-obsessed definitely helps," Pozella writes on the site.
The scale of the task is considerable. The pre-digital camera industry produced thousands of models, with manufacturers appearing and disappearing, cameras being rebadged for different markets and numerous minor revisions making the history difficult to untangle.
Information is often spread across collector books, manuals, auction listings and enthusiast websites.
The Index is intended to bring much of that information together in one place, making it useful not only to photographers and collectors, but also researchers and camera repairers.
The project will eventually extend beyond cameras, with Pozella planning to add lenses, accessories and other pieces of photographic history.
Camera Index is not the first attempt to bring this information together however. Camera-wiki has built a substantial online reference, while McKeown's Camera Encyclopedia & Price Guide has long been an important resource for collectors. The 12th edition of McKeown's was published in 2004, although a new online edition is reportedly planned for 2027.
