The National Portrait Gallery announced the winner of the National Photographic Portrait Prize for 2011, with Jacqueline Mitelman taking out the prize with her photograph “Miss Alesandra 2010”.

Jacqueline Mitelman said, “I took photographs of Suzi Alesandra over 25 years ago, and it has been almost that long since I last saw her. I found her as striking and interesting as she had been in her youth, and I wanted to show both the wear of time, and some continuity of the spirit. The image I chose reminded me of classical painted portraiture.”

VISA generously sponsored the exhibition and provided the winning prize money of $25,000. The winning work was selected from the National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition of 55 finalists and since its time on display in Canberra is touring nationally.

From May 27 to July 3 the exhibition will be on display at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries; from July 15 to August 28 it will be on display at Geraldton Regional Art Gallery; from September 9 to November 27 it will be on display at Fremantle Prison Gallery; and from January 26 to March 25, 2012 it will be on display at Victoria’s Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.

The call for entries for the National Photographic Prize 2012 will commence in August 2011.
