An exhibition of images from New Zealand’s South Island by MikiNobu Komatsu opens at the Stanley Street Gallery in Sydney in September.
A new exhibition of landscape photographs by Sydney-based photographer MikiNobu Komatsu opens at Sydney's Stanley Street Gallery in September.
Komatsu was born in Japan, educated in Tokyo and New York and has lived in Sydney since 1977. Light Moods South includes images shot over several decades in New Zealand's South Island, and is a result, says the photographer, of his long love affair with the area, which he describes as "a second home" and has visited at least several times a year over the past 30 years.
"I developed a passion to capture my emotional response on film when encountering the extraordinary scenes in various rich light in the South Island," said Komatsu.
The exhibition coincides with the release of a book of the same name and features a personal haiku, written by Komatsu, for each image.
"All the works in this exhibition are selected from the book, along with haiku, which I believe adds another dimension to the work," said Komatsu.
All photographs were shot on transparency film and printed directly to Cibachrome paper, with no digital processing. Production of Cibachrome film stopped a couple of years ago, and images produced on them have since become relatively rare. MikiNobu first shot landscapes in colour in Australia and New Zealand. He then developed an interest in photojournalistic images, many of which he shoots in black and white, while travelling extensively to other parts of the world.
Light Moods South will be showing at Stanley Street Gallery, 1/52-54 Stanley St, Darlinghurst, Sydney from September 10 to September 27. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 6pm.
