Magnum Photos and LensCulture have announced the winners of the first annual Magnum Photography Awards.
The international jury selected 44 photographers from around the world for recognition in the inaugural awards. Six winners were named in the portfolio categories and six in the single-image categories.
Portfolio winners: Mauricio Lima, Brazil, Documentary Series; Dougie Wallace, United Kingdom, Street Series; Jens Juul, Denmark, Portrait Series; Sandra Hoyn, Germany, Photojournalism Series; Aaron Hardin, United States, Fine Art Series; Julián Barón García, Spain, Open Series.
Single-image winners: Cris Toala Olivares, Netherlands, Documentary Single Image; Ofir Barak, Israel, Street Single Image; Hannah Modigh, Sweden, Portrait Single Image; Valery Melnikov, Russian Federation, Photojournalism Single Image; Kyle Weeks, South Africa, Fine Art Single Image; Asger Ladefoged, Denmark, Open Single Image.
"We were delighted by the diversity and quality of submissions to the Magnum Photography Awards 2016," said David Kogan, Executive Director, Magnum Photos. "We came across brilliant storytelling from all corners of the world, powerful documentation of important issues, and memorable single images."
The competition was judged by Martin Parr, President Magnum Photos; David Kogan, Executive Director Magnum Photos; Stacey Baker, Photo Editor New York Times Magazine; David Alan Harvey, Magnum Photographer; Amy Pereira, Director of Photography MSNBC; Newsha Tavakolian, Magnum Photographer; Jim Casper, Publisher LensCulture.
