A group exhibition by 10 prominent photographers at Damien Minton Gallery in Sydney explores the meaning of ‘place’ .
A group of 10 photographers is exploring what ‘place’ means in a widely varying series of images at the Damien Minton Gallery in Redfern, Sydney. ‘Lost in Place: Photographers who have an attachment to place’ runs from November 5 to 9, and artist talks about the theme will held on Friday, November 8 at 5pm and Saturday, November 9 at 3pm.
The group of 10 photographers are Catherine Cloran, Digby Duncan, Helen Grace, Caroline McLean-Foldes, Sally McInerney, Ian Provest, Suellen Symons, Chris Round, Lynn Smith, and Niobe Syme. The curators say ‘place’ is at the heart of the photographic work in this exhibition.
“To try to define ‘place’ is to slip and slide from one idea to another as often our attachment to a particular place can be emotional and subjective. This can be anything from a strongly felt sense of identity and belonging to a place, or the memory of a dramatic event which may have occurred there, or simply because of a visual attraction to a place due to a certain ambience or even the quality of light,” says Catherine Cloran, assistant curator & artist.
She says, “The 10 photographers in this exhibition approach the notion of place with a wide range of purpose, intent and intuition. They all have strong attachments to the place of their images and the associations created by place are expressed more powerfully by the absence of human presence within them. It is as if the place embodies memory and holds the impression of human presence and activity. The objects and landscapes within the images stand in for these emotional associations. So in almost all cases whilst people are visually absent in the photographs, their presence is strongly felt."
