The January issue of Australian Photography + digital is out now, with loads of great features for enthusiasts.
In the January issue of Australian Photography + digital we demystify the concept of depth of field, explain how to shoot stunning images under water, and talk to three professional photographers about how to make mouth-watering images of food, amongst many other great topics.
Pro shooters Ben Cole, Dario Milano, and Tanya Zouev are three photographers who make their living by creating luscious-looking images of food for anyone, from producers to restaurants. They know how to make food look fabulous whilst working within a limited time frame, and in this interview with Rob Ditessa they explain many of the tricks and tips they use. From limiting depth of field, to setting up with natural light, the ideas they talk about are highly effective, and their experience will offer an invaluable learning tool for enthusiasts.
In fact, in any genre one of the most fundamental photographic principles you can use to make more creative images is to vary the depth of field in your shots. Peter Burian takes a detailed look at the concept of depth of field, outlines why it’s so important, and describes how you can use it make your images really stand out.
On another front, at the height of summer many photographers like to take their camera equipment on holiday with them, often to seaside locations. In this issue we take a look at how to shoot underwater images. Of course, deep diving requires camera housings, as well as diving equipment, so our expert Justin Gilligan also outlines the ideas you can try in relatively shallow water as well. From estuaries and lagoons, to the edges of our coastal waters, there are literally dozens of opportunities for adventurous shooters, and Gilligan explains how to take advantage of them.
For those in the market for some new lenses, our regular technical writer Peter Burian presents an overview of ultra-wide angle zoom lenses. If you’re searching for a very different look, Burian says this type of lens offers a lot of scope for development of a new style of image, as well as being compact and easy to handle.
Also in the January issue, check out another dramatic image from Justin Gilligan, taken under far more nerve-racking circumstances, in which he swam beside a school of sharks and photographed them close-up; see our latest competition category of 'Sport', and take a look at our review of a new Lomo camera – the Konstruktor – which you can build yourself!
