Citizen, an exhibition of portraits by Ingvar Kenne, has opened at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and will run until 27 January 2013.

The exhibition comprises 27 portraits photographed in Australia, China, Laos, Papua New Guinea and the United States of America and includes images of  Lee Lin Chin, David Wenham, Nick Cave, Akira Isogawa and Alexis Wright.

"By applying the same photographic parameters and treating each of his sitters as equal, Kenne creates an intimate collective of what [Kenne] refers to as ‘fellow man’," says a release  from the National Portrait Gallery. "This notion reminds us that our unique experience of life is something that we all share."

Kenne was born in Sweden in 1965 and arrived in Sydney with little more than a camera and a motorcycle. He has been based in Australian since 1996, shooting for leading publications and commercial clients, as well as his own artistic pursuits. The Gallery holds three portraits by Ingvar Kenne, which are included in the exhibition. Kenne was the winner of the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 and also a finalist in the 2007, 2010 and 2012 Prizes.

A book, Citizen: Portraits by Ingvar Kenne 1997-2012, has been produced by the artist with independent publishers Au.Thentic Press to document the project. Citizen: Portraits by Ingvar Kenne 1997-2012 is a photographic monograph that showcases the artist's photographic style, and will be available to purchase.
