Finalists announced in Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2022

The finalists in the running to take home the title of Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2022 have been announced.

Put together by the South Australian Museum in partnership with Australian Geographic, the annual competition received the highest number of submissions yet, with entries coming in from 602 photographers across 10 countries. The judging panel has narrowed down the record 2443 entries to a shortlist of 98 images.

In response to the growing popularity of the annual competition, this year’s categories for entry were expanded to include the additions of Astrophotography, Animals in Nature and Urban Animals.

Speaking on the introduction of the new catgeories, Director of the South Australian Museum Brian Oldman said, “The new categories allow photographers to explore themes that the competition has not before."

"The Astrophotography category reminds us to look up and depicts nature at its most mesmerising while the Urban Animals category reminds us of the fragility of our coexistence with nature.”

The other award categories are Botanical, Junior, Landscape, Monochrome, Our Impact, Threatened Species, as well as the Portfolio Prize.

The winners announcement will be made on Thursday 25 August 2022. The exhibition of finalist photographs will then be open to the public a few days later on Saturday 27 August.
