Aaron Bishop has won the 'Colour Yellow' competition with an image of three white bowls set against a bright yellow background, described as a “bold, simple, semi-abstract composition” by this month's guest judge, Robert Keeley. Little Bowls of Sunshine combines a minimal aesthetic with the yellow theme to demonstrate how basic elements simply arranged can pay off:

“His bright and basic image really grabbed my attention.” says Keeley of Aaron’s winning image.

“By using a tried and tested formula of ‘keeping it simple’, his overhead shot reduced these objects to a punchy, powerful construction.”

With evenly balanced lighting and just a hint of shadow to create some depth, the contrasting colours add impact enough for this photo to win first place.

Among a very strong final selection for this category, our highly commended images were also excellent. Robin Reidy’s shot of yellow high-heel shoes under a formal dress was another example of simplicity.

“It’s sharp and clean, and more importantly it clearly focused on the idea in a creative way. It kept drawing me back to it. You can’t ask more than that.” says Keeley.

Our final highly commended image, a semi-silhouette of a bike rider on the peak of a bridge, starkly captured a dramatically lit outdoor setting and showed great anticipation and timing on the part of the photographer, Dianne Galbraith.

“Silhouettes can very easily become indistinguishable blobs if they aren’t captured perfectly. In this image Dianne  got the right instance, and combined with the ‘leading line’ effect of the footbridge and its highlighted handrails, I felt she successfully created an arresting shot.”

As the winner of our monthly competition, Aaron will receive the Spyder4PRO from Kayell Australia, valued at $240. With a patented 7-colour sensor, the Spyder4PRO automates and simplifies display calibration to deliver consistent and predictable colour.

The theme for our March competition is Weather.
