A prize pool of over $50,000 will be awarded to the most outstanding images in four Head On Festival competitions, with entries closing 9 March 2014. This year celebrates the fifth anniversary of the festival and the tenth anniversary of the prestigious Head On Portrait Prize.
Moshe Rosenzveig, Head On Festival Director, says that “each year we strive to offer categories that are diverse and cover many areas from traditional to innovative. We want to inspire photographers from all types of photographic backgrounds to enter their work, to have the opportunity to be judged by their peers and to be inspired by the winners from year to year. The addition of the multi-media award proves our commitment to this and we look forward to once again seeing the phenomenal quality and creativity of the works entered.”
The Head On Portrait Prize will award the three best images that feature a subject or reflect their essence. Portraits are judged on the strength of the image rather than the celebrity of the photographer or subject. The 40 finalists' work in this category will exhibit at Auckland Photography Festival, Pingyao Festival in China and Photoville in New York City.
'Large Vista' images of either the natural, urban or industrial environments will be the focus of the Head On Landscape Prize, with finalists exhibiting at Parliament House of NSW throughout the festival.
The Mobile Phone and Multimedia Awards both celebrate the use of new technologies. Both spontaneous and classically inspired images will represent the diverse range of photo-artistry in the Mobile Phone Awards, while the the inaugural multimedia award will focus on short pieces combining visual art, sound art, moving images or other media.
The Head On Photo Festival is on throughout Sydney CBD and beyond from 12 May until 8 June 2014. Prize winners will be announced at the festival opening on 16 May 2014.
