Food is one of our most indulgent, multi-sensory experiences, but what happens when you take away everything except the taste itself – what does it look like?
It’s called ‘synaesthesia’, and it’s the theme of the latest instalment of Canon’s The Lab series, which aims to shift creative thinking behind the lens.
Titled Menu, the project involves a blind tasting at Sydney restaurant Automata, with three photographers recreating the imagined tastes, flavours and textures of various dishes, through the lens of their cameras.
As Canon says, photography is a powerful sensory trigger for much more than just the eyes. The result is a set of three visually powerful images that attempt to encapsulate the food and the experience.
