Experts from the Ballarat Foto Biennale will be available to review portfolios early in the month-long festival. By Robert Keeley.

Photographers at this year's Ballarat International Foto Biennale will be able to have their images assessed by an expert panel comprising 20 photo industry professionals. The BIFB runs from August 20 to September 18, and the portfolio reviews will take place on Sunday, August 21, and Monday, August 22, at the Mercure Hotel in the Victorian western district regional city of Ballarat.

The reviews offer photographers of all skill levels a chance to have their images assessed by a range of influential figures in photography over a number of 20-minute one-on-one interviews. The assessments can offer valuable feedback and advice to emerging photographers and the review experts include Julia Durkin (Director of the Auckland Festival of Photography), Julie Millowick (Lecturer in photography, LaTrobe University), Dr. Martyn Jolly (Head of Photography and the Media Arts at Australian National University School of Arts), Alasdair Foster (a photographic consultant and former Director of the Australian Centre for Photography), and Cynthia Karalla (a Core Program artist at the BIFB), amongst others.

One participant will receive a prize where they can submit a proposal to be included in the Core Program of key artists for BIFB 2013. Three other candidates will win a $300 Blurb publishing voucher to produce their folio in a book format. Blurb is a creative publishing service.

There are four sessions available to each participant on day one of the review process, and the four assessments for each photographer will cost a total of $140. Eight sessions will be available to each participant on day two, at a cost of $220.

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is the fourth festival run by Director Jeff Moorfoot, and the second staged in Ballarat. The first two events were in nearby Daylesford.
