The Ballarat International Foto Biennale's (BIFB) two public photography awards – the newly created New Photography Award and the Martin Kantor Award – are now open for entries.

The inaugural New Photography Award is open to photographic artists working in the Asia Pacific region and aims to showcase the best local talent to an international audience.

All applicants will have their submissions reviewed by an international jury of leading curators and gallery directors with up to six artists receiving a solo exhibition within the 2019 core program, along with one-on-one support from BIFB curators.

The theme for the New Photography Award is ‘Hello World’ with entrants asked to consider the challenges of a globalising world in areas of ecology, rights, race, capital and conflict.

A cash prize of $10,000 will be awarded to the overall winner, with an additional $1,000 given to the People’s Choice. Entries close 1 May 2019.

The Martin Kantor Portrait Prize is open to all photographers and photo media artists. The acquisitive first prize of $15,000, supported by the Dara Foundation, will be awarded to the work considered to be an exceptional photographic portrait of a significant, living Australian, distinguished in art, letters, science, sports or politics.

Entrants have the chance to have their work exhibited at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale at the newly renovated National Centre for Photography – Australia’s only regional gallery dedicated exclusively to photography. Entries for the Martin Kantor Portrait Prize close 31 May 2019.
