The overall winner of Capture magazine’s fourth annual Top Emerging Photographers awards, earning the title of Australia’s Top Emerging Photographer of 2012, is photographer Mardiana Sani.
The Malaysian-born photographer graduated from RMIT with a Bachelor of Arts (Photography) in 2011 and now operates out of Blue Tree Studios in Melbourne. As well as the overall award, Sani also picked up the category award for Top Emerging Portrait Photogarapher.
This year’s
call for entries attracted more
than 4000 images from several hundred photographers. The awards aim to encourage and identify up and
coming photographers, promoting them in the early stages of their photographic
careers. The challenging task of judging the entries was enthusiastically
accepted by some of Australia’s preeminent professional photographers,
including Simon Harsent, Andreas Bommert, Sean Izzard, Stephen Dupont and
Petrina Tinsley. Judges praised the winners’ creativity and individuality, and the
overall quality of entries.
To be in the running to win
the title of Australia’s Top Emerging
Photographer, photographers with less than four years’ full-time
professional shooting were invited to submit six images in one or more of eight
categories: Advertising; Architecture; Editorial and Fashion; Landscape;
Documentary and Photojournalism; Portrait; Sport; and Wedding.
