Portrait Equality provides free family portraits to disadvantaged families in developing nations. A new exhibition features photos of some of the people the not-for-profit organisation has helped.

With the widespread availability of digital cameras it's hard to imagine there are people who have never had their photo taken. And yet, that was the situation that Australian photographer Tasmin Brown and her partner Daniel reportedly encountered when they travelled to the highlands of Papua New Guinea in 2010.

The experience became the motivation for Portrait Equality, a not-for-profit organisation which loans instant cameras and film to travelling photographers who then provide free family portraits to disadvantaged families in developing nations.

The organisation will host its first exhibition at Sydney's Mils Gallery on 1 May 2013, featuring colour and black-and-white prints of families who have benefited from the charity's efforts. Prints from the exhibition will be available for sale through a silent auction held on the night, which will raise funds for more cameras, film, and eventually, more family portraits.

When: 1 May, 2013. 6-8pm
Where: Mils Gallery, 15 Randle St, Surry Hills, NSW
