An exhibition of photographs by Ansel Adams (1902-1984), one of the United States’ most celebrated photographers opens at the Australian National Maritime Museum on 4 July 2013. His spectacular black and white images of mountains, rivers and the sea captured the epic proportions of the American landscape from New England to Yosemite and Alaska to Hawaii.

The exhibition of more than 70 photographs taken between 1918 and 1968 feature iconic images such as The Tetons and the Snake River, Grand Teton National Park from 1942, and perhaps less well known but equally extraordinary works such as the Shipwreck Series, Lands End, San Francisco, ca.1934, and Orchard Cliff, Snow, Yosemite National Park.

The exhibition focuses on Adams’ exploration and fascination with water in the landscape including waves and sea pools, waterfalls, mist and clouds, geysers and ice, and offers a fresh perspective on his singular career.

“In addition to his well known commissions, this exhibition allows visitors to see the pictures that Adams made for himself. These personal and sometimes experimental images express his thoughts about the natural world and often push the boundaries between realism and abstraction,” says Kevin Sumption, museum director.

Ansel Adams: Photography from the Mountains to the Sea is organised by the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts. Support for the exhibition was provided by David H. Arrington, and the Center of Creative Photography, University of Arizona.

The exhibition is on at the Australian National Maritime Museum until 8 December 2013.

Ansel Adams Exhibition & Galleries ticket is: Adult $15, Child & Concession $10. Admission is also included with the Museum’s Big Ticket (Galleries & Exhibitions + Vessels + Kids on Deck): Adult $25, Child $15, Concession $10, Family $65.
