The winners of Head On 2013 have been announced with Jonathan May, Tim Levy and Ingvar Kenne taking the top awards. The winners and finalists were selected from more than 3750 entries.
Along with the Head On Portrait Prize, which is now in its 10th year, 2013 saw the introduction of two new categories; the Head Off Landscape Prize and Head On Momento Photobook Awards.
At a ceremony at Sydney TAFE Jonathan May was awarded first place in the Head On Portrait Prize for his photo of Stanford, a young boy who May met while visiting a school for blind children in Kenya. As well as being blind, Stanford also has an undiagnosed skin condition. The judges described the image as, "A powerful image of the resilience of the human spirit despite the tragedy of his life. [The image] juxtaposes the harrowing experience he endured and the innocence of childhood and playfulness."
Sydney-based freelance photographer Tim Levy won the inaugural Head Off Landscape Prize with his image, "Las Vegas is Purgatory – The Gambler". Levy, who has worked professionally in most areas of the photo industry, took the shot from the rooftop of his Las Vegas hotel on a recent visit to the US. "Winning…was a fairly surreal experience and a 'full circle' moment as coincidently, the awards night was held where I had originally studied the Diploma of Photography at Sydney TAFE. I'm fairly lazy when it comes to self-promotion and entering competitions so I wasn't expecting this at all. The nice thing about winning is that people look at your earlier work with slightly more interest now – as if it validates your taste somewhat."
Ingvar Kenne won first prize in the Momento PhotoBook category with his book Citizen 1997-2012, a photographic monograph showcasing Kenne's portraits – of famous and not-so-famous people – over a five-year period.
"Every year I’m surprised by the sheer number and the amazing quality of the entries and this year was no exception. I was very excited to see how much interest there was in the Landscape category which received such a diversity of entries," said Moshe Rozenveig, Founder Head On.
The 2013 Head On Awards offered a prize pool of $80,000, with $5000 cash awarded to each of the winners of the portrait, landscape and photobook categories.
Winning entries will be exhibited in the 2013 Head On Photo Festival,
which runs until 23 June 2013. The annual event includes hundreds of
photo exhibitions and events around Sydney in galleries and other
venues.
