Melbourne’s Monash Gallery of Art will announce the winner of its prestigious Bowness Photography Prize award next week.
The winner of the annual $25,000 Bowness Photography Prize will be selected at a gala event at Monash Gallery of Art on October 3 from a list of 46 photographs. Among the contenders are top Australian shooters Narelle Autio, Andrew Chapman, Michael Corridore, and Wayne Quilliam.
The William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize was established in 2006 to promote excellence in photography and is an initiative of the MGA Foundation. The judging panel for the prize this year includes artist Brook Andrew, AGNSW Senior Curator of Photographs Judy Annear, and MGA Gallery Director Shaune Lakin. With a total of 562 entries this was the biggest competition in the history of the prize.
MGA Gallery Director Shaune Lakin said, “The calibre of work was extraordinarily high and covered all aspects of contemporary practice, making the selection process very difficult. The judges looked at over 2500 images and selected a field of finalists that represent the best of contemporary Australian Photography.”
The most popular photograph as judged by visitors to the gallery will win a $1000 People's Choice award.
The Bowness prize images will be on display from October 4 until November 3 at Monash Gallery of Art, 860 Ferntree Gully Rd, Wheelers Hill, Victoria. Finalist’s images can be viewed on Flickr.
