Tamron launches updated 70–180mm f/2.8 G2, now coming for Nikon Z mount
Tamron has introduced the second-generation 70–180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2, a compact full-frame telephoto zoom that will soon be available for both Sony E and Nikon Z mounts.
Measuring 156.5mm long at 70mm and weighing 855g, the new lens keeps its fast f/2.8 aperture but adds Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation) stabilisation and improved close-up performance.
Inside, it features a new optical design with 20 elements in 15 groups, including a mix of XLD, LD, and aspherical elements, along with Tamron’s BBAR-G2 coating to help control flare and ghosting.
Autofocus is powered by the company’s VXD linear motor system, with updated algorithms for better subject tracking and quiet operation — handy for video work. The built-in VC stabilisation helps reduce shake, and AI-based processing automatically adjusts stabilisation when filming at shorter focal lengths.
The lens can focus as close as 30cm at 70mm or 85cm at 180mm, with a maximum magnification of 1:2.6. It also shares Tamron’s standard 67mm filter thread and works with the Tamron Lens Utility app for customisation and firmware updates.
The Tamron 70–180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 will be priced at AU$2,449.
