Tamron announces 90mm f/2.8 Macro lens for Nikon Z and Sony E
Tamron has announced the 90mm F/2.8 Di III MACRO VXD (Model F072) lens, a mid-telephoto 1:1 macro lens, compatible with Sony E-mount and Nikon Z mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.
Tamron's new glass is a significant one for the Japanese brand: it has offered a 90mm macro dating all the way back to 1979.
In fact, the company's first 90mm macro lens, the SP 90mm F/2.5 (Model 52B) was initially used mainly for academic purposes, but it soon became popular for various types of photography, including outdoor field work and portraiture, something that the focal length remains popular with today.
Affectionately nicknamed "Tamukyu," a portmanteau of two Japanese words, the SP 90mm garnered high praise from close-up aficionados, nature photographers and portrait enthusiasts alike.
But enough with the old, what about the new!?
The optical design of Tamron's latest 90mm consists of 15 elements in 12 groups and there are 12 aperture blades.
The lens weighs 630g and it has a 67mm filter thread.
The AF drive is powered by a linear motor focus mechanism, Tamron's VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive). In addition, the linear motor is quiet and vibration-free during focusing, making it ideal for shooting still and moving images in environments where quietness is required.
Externally, there's a Focus Set Button for assigning camera functions and a Focus limiter switch for faster focusing during AF shooting and quick refocusing on subjects.
The 90mm F/2.8 Di III MACRO VXD (Model F072) lens will retail for $1,199. You can find out more about the lens here.
