Sony stops production of A7 II series and a6400 cameras

Sony Japan has stopped production of five camera systems and an accessory due to the global semiconductor shortage.

In a notice published on the Sony Japan website, Sony says it has stopped orders for the A7 II series, A6400 series, A6100 cameras (although only the black models), its PXW-Z190 professional 4K camcorder and ECM-B1M shotgun microphone.

According to the statement, the company was accepting orders for all the products until 19 November, and it appears Sony intends to honour orders received up to this date. However, with some of the models ike the A7 II now more than six years old, it is possible the company won't ever resume production.

‘We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers,’ the statement says. 

For now, you can still order the A7 II from most online retailers, with the official Sony website selling the body for $1,799. 

Sony is not the only manufacturer to be affected by the global semiconducter shortage. Earlier this year, Canon announced delays for the EOS R3, and the Nikon Z 9 is also expected to be delayed into the new year.
