Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM II announced

Sony has announced the release of the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II, which it is calling the world's lightest f/2.8 standard zoom lens.

Six years have passed since Sony released the first 24-70 mm F2.8 G Master lens, and the company says the new Mark II version is a complete ground-up redesign aimed at improving both weight and sharpness.

On paper at least, it appears Sony has acheived its goal - the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II weighs 695 grams, approximately 20% less than the original 24-70 mm F2.8 G Master. The lens’ length has also been reduced by 16mm, and overall volume has been reduced by approximately 18%.

Inside, the lens features five aspherical elements, two of which feature high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements. The lens also includes two ED (extra-low dispersion) plus two Super ED glass elements. These elements are combined using a floating focus mechanism to control chromatic aberration, astigmatism, distortion and coma.

The lens also feature four XD Linear Motors, which should help run a swift, silent autofocus.

Sony says that based on feedback, a number of new lens features have also been included, many of which we saw with the recently announced Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II (which we're currently reviewing). These include:

• A new aperture control ring with a de-clickable switch and iris lock switch
• Two customisable focus hold buttons, and a zoom smoothness switch
• The focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually
• A new lens hood design with an opening to adjust CPL filters
• The center of gravity has been weighted back towards the mount for improved handling and operation. 

In addition, there's an updated dust and moisture resistant design, with the buttons and switches fitted with rubber gaskets, and a rubber ring sealing the lens mount. The front lens element also features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while also making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that become attached to the lens surface.

The Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is available for pre-order on Sony's Australian website now for $3,299. First orders ship in May.
