Sony has announced the 24-50mm F2.8G lens for its full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The new general purpose lens weighs 440 grams and is just 92mm long, considerably lighter and smaller than Sony's 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens (695gm), and a fair bit cheaper than that lens too, which retails for a hefty $2,899.

The lens is built around an 11-blade circular aperture, and it uses a combination of ED and aspherical elements.

Additionally, twin linear motors manage focusing, and Sony says that the lens can keep up with the 120 fps burst mode of the A9 III.

The lens has a minimum shooting distance of 0.19m at the wide-end and a maximum magnification of 0.30x. It also supports in-body Active Mode image stabilisation for steady shooting, and is compatible with Sony's camera focus breathing compensation.

Interestingly, the lens extends at 24mm and retracts at 50mm, the opposite of what we normally see with zooms.

The 24-50mm F2.8G will be available in April 2024 for $1,999.00.
