Western Digital has announced the SanDisk Professional Pro-G40 SSD, its latest solid state drive and perhaps its most robust yet, with the drive capable of withstanding a 3m drop and up to 1800kg of crushing force.

The compact drive (4.37-by-2.28-by-0.47 inches) is available in 1 and 2TB variants and has an IP68 dust/water resistance rating. On the outside, a "pro-grade" enclosure protects the internal NVMe SSD, which is combined with an aluminium core to dissipate heat.

The Pro-G40 can be accessed using either a Thunderbolt 3 40Gbps connection, or a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps connection (for non-Thunderbolt 3 devices) through a single port, with SanDisk including a cable that supports both interfaces.

With Thunderbolt 3, Western Digital claims the drive can offer read and write speeds up to 2700MB/s and 1900MB/s, and 1,050MB/s reads and 1,000MB/s writes using USB 3.2 Gen 2.

The Pro-G40 SSD is available to order now direct from Western Digital in either 1TB ($300USD/$460 AUD) or 2TB ($450 USD/$779 AUD) capacities, although we are yet to get any confirmation about local availability. We also hope to get one in for review soon.
