In what has proved to be a relatively quiet couple of weeks for new camera gear announcements, Pentax parent company Ricoh has announced the development of its third “Star-Series lens”, the HD Pentax-D FA* 85mm f/1.4 SDM AW.  The new portrait lens will be the second prime in the company's premium lens lineup.

Inside are three Super ED elements to suppress chromatic aberation, one aspherical element, and a “newly-developed developed Supersonic Direct-drive Motor (SDM) to handle autofocus. Aperture is controlled by 9 rounded blades, and there's a weather sealed design.

According to Pentax, the new lens will match the optical performance of the FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 and the FA* 50mm f/1.4, which should mean they offer excellent imaging performance.

No local pricing or availability has been confirmed as yet, but you can expect to find out more about the new lenses shortly. Keep an eye on the Pentax Australia website for more.
