Nikon has released a fast mid-tiered, compact 50mm f/1.4 lens for their mirrorless Z series cameras that retails for around $950.
The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.4 measures approximately 74.5×86.5mm and weighing just 420g, and with its small size is a good choice for content creators who want to shoot with the camera on a gimbal.
It also means Nikon users can now choose between four different 50mm primes, although this includes the incredibly niche, manual focus only NIKKOR 58mm f/0.95 S Noct which has a street price of a breathtaking $13,999.
Interestingly, the new lens's direct competition come from another NIKKOR lens – the similarly weighted, sized and priced NIKKOR Z 50mm f1.8S which is currently retailing between $985 – $1,050 (the 'S' designation symbolises the top-of-the-line lenses, similar to Canon's 'L' or Sony's G Master)
The other 50mm lens to consider is the flagship NIKKOR 50mm f1.2S which has a street price between $3,000 – $3,300.
The new lens may not be a top of the line 'S' lens, but it is 2/3rds of a stop faster than the f/1.8 S lens while featuring fast STM autofocusing as well as being dust and drip-resistant.
The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.4 is available for pre-order, yet no word on when it will be in stock.
