Leica widens its iconic Noctilux with the new M 35 f/1.2 ASPH
Leica has expanded its iconic Noctilux line for the first time to include a 35mm focal length with the release of the Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH.
Previous Noctilux lenses have been limited to 50mm and 75mm focal lengths. The addition of a 35mm option extends the series to a more widely used focal length, and would likely be a good pick for portraiture, reportage, street and available light photography.
The new lens features a fast maximum aperture of f/1.2 and is designed to deliver high contrast and clear image rendering. A floating element in the optical design is used to maintain consistent performance throughout the focusing range.
In addition, the Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH. is the first Noctilux lens to offer a minimum focusing distance of 50cm. On M cameras using the optical rangefinder, focusing is supported down to 70cm.
Focusing from 70cm to 50cm is carried out using Live View on the rear screen or via the Visoflex 2 electronic viewfinder. The lens features a large focusing throw to support precise manual focus control.
The lens has also been redesigned for use with current high resolution M series sensors and, like other Leica glass, is handcrafted in Wetzlar.
Its optical construction consists of ten elements in five groups, including three aspherical elements. An integrated lens hood is designed to reduce flare and internal reflections.
Physically, the lens measures 50mm in length, has a diameter of 65mm and weighs 415g.
The Leica Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH. is available now through Leica Stores around the country, as well as authorised Leica dealers. The recommended retail price is (gulp!) $15,990 including GST.
