Leica unveils first M-System camera with built-in electronic viewfinder: The M EV1
Leica has introduced the M EV1, the first camera in its M-System range to include a built-in electronic viewfinder.
The new model adds another option to the long-running M lineup, sitting alongside the digital and film versions that use Leica’s traditional optical rangefinder.
The M EV1 pairs the familiar design and handling of an M with the flexibility of an EVF.
The viewfinder shows exactly what the final image will look like, helping photographers compose and focus accurately with lenses across the range — from ultra-wide and telephoto to macro.
The 5.76-megapixel EVF provides a high-resolution, real-time preview, with focus aids such as peaking and zoom to fine-tune manual focus.
A front lever replaces the usual frame-line selector and can be set to control focus assist or digital zoom.
Inside, the M EV1 uses the same full-frame BSI-CMOS sensor found in the M11, offering 60, 36 or 18-megapixel output. Images can be saved as DNG or JPEG to the 64GB internal memory or an SD card.
The camera also includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity via the Leica FOTOS app, and supports Leica’s Content Credentials system to verify image authenticity.
Hand-built in Germany, the M EV1 features a clean, understated design with a new diamond-pattern leatherette finish that sets it apart from the rangefinder models.
The Leica M EV1 is available from 24 October 2025 through Leica Stores, authorised dealers and the Leica Online Store for (hold your wallets) $13,990 including GST.
A matching hand grip is available for $720.
The release arrives as Leica marks 100 years since the launch of the original Leica I in 1925, the first mass-produced 35mm still camera.
