Insta360 X6 adds 8K video, larger sensors and AI editing to flagship 360 camera

Insta360 has announced the X6, its latest flagship 360 camera, marking a decade since the company launched its first 360-degree imaging product.

The X6 uses two custom Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors, which the company says increase sensor area by 33 per cent compared with its previous design and allow greater light capture. The camera can record 8K 360-degree video at 50fps and includes a new low-light mode designed to reduce flicker and noise in darker scenes.

The camera also introduces native Dolby Vision and 10-bit colour recording, while Insta360's Triple AI Chip System is designed to handle image processing and noise reduction.

The X6 can be used in three modes: 360-degree recording, a single-lens mode for conventional wide-angle footage, and InstaFrame 2.0, which records 4K video directly from the camera. InstaFrame 2.0 includes subject tracking for people, pets and objects. Single-lens recording is available at up to 5K60fps, with 4K120fps available for slow-motion footage.

AI editing

A major focus of the X6 is its software. The camera introduces Insta360's PanoMind AI system, which the company says was trained using more than 10,000 hours of footage across more than 30 scenarios, including cycling, travel, skiing, diving and motorcycling.

PanoMind powers several new editing features. AI Director analyses footage and creates edited clips while the camera is charging, while Auto Edit 2.0 is designed to identify highlights and create edited sequences automatically. Moments Pro combines Google's Gemini model with Insta360's 360-degree imaging technology to create clips based on user-selected keywords.

The X6 also retains FlowState stabilisation and 360 Horizon Lock. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth, while Insta360 Studio remains available for Mac and Windows users who want more control over 360-degree footage in post-production.

Accessories galore

The X6 is compatible with more than 100 accessories, including mounts for cycling, motorcycling, diving and driving.

For cyclists, the system supports data overlays from devices including Garmin and Apple Watch. A dedicated motorcycle kit adds a speed dashboard overlay, automatic looping dashcam recording and automatic licence plate blurring.

The camera has a 2.32-inch OLED display with a peak brightness of 1200 nits. Its new 2600mAh battery is rated for up to 140 minutes of 8K30fps 360-degree recording, according to Insta360, and can charge from empty to 80 per cent in 24 minutes. The X6 is waterproof to 20 metres without a case and to 60 metres with the optional Invisible Dive Case Pro.

The camera also includes replaceable lenses, 47GB of usable internal storage and four microphones for 360-degree audio recording.

The Insta360 X6 is available in Australia from August 13, with an RRP of AU$1049.99 for the Standard Bundle. An Essentials Bundle is available for AU$1159.99.
