Well, we didn't see that coming - GoPro has announced the Mission 1 Series, a new range of compact cinema cameras aimed at filmmakers and content creators.

That may not be all that surprising you may say...but what is is that in the lineup is the company’s first interchangeable lens camera, featuring a Micro Four Thirds mount compatible with a wide range of lenses via adapters.

There are three models, the Mission 1 PRO, Mission 1 and Mission 1 PRO ILS - that's the interchangeable lens one. They are all built around a 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor and GoPro’s new GP3 processor, which the company says improves low-light performance, dynamic range and power efficiency.

GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman said the series has been developed in response to demand from professional users working in challenging environments.

The flagship models support up to 8K video at 60 frames per second, along with high frame rate options including 4K at 240fps and 1080p at up to 960fps in short bursts. Open Gate recording is also available for greater flexibility in post-production.

GoPro says the new processor enables extended recording times, with more than five hours at 1080p and over three hours at 4K on a single charge using the Enduro 2 battery.

The cameras also offer 50MP stills capture with RAW support, automated shooting modes for common scenarios, and updated hardware including a larger rear display and improved controls. The Mission 1 and Mission 1 PRO are waterproof to 20 metres without housing.

As you'd expect from the brand that pioneered the accessories market for action cams, a range of accessories, including audio systems, filters, grips and lighting, will be released progressively from May 2026 through to the third quarter.

In a way, GoPro introducing an interchangeable lens camera isn't entirely out of left field.

The company has been releasing products like its Anamorphic and Macro "Mods" for a few years for its traditional action cameras, and it is clearly aiming to diversify its customer base to target more pro-level users, something made all the more pressing by recent news that it is set to lay off a quarter of its US-based workforce, following cuts last year.

No local pricing or availability on its new product line has been set yet, but we'll update this story once we have confirmation from GoPro.

While you wait, you can find out more about the new products on GoPro's website.
