Freefly Systems has joined the L-Mount Alliance, becoming the 11th member of the growing camera ecosystem built around the L-Mount standard.

The alliance, launched in 2018 by Leica Camera AG alongside SIGMA and Panasonic, now includes a mix of imaging and tech companies such as DJI and Blackmagic Design.

Freefly’s addition brings a company known for drones and high-speed camera systems into the fold.

The L-Mount standard underpins more than 20 cameras and over 130 lenses, with full cross-compatibility between brands without adapters. It was designed to be a flexible, future-proof system for both stills and video.

Leica says Freefly’s expertise in aerial cinematography and camera movement systems will expand creative options within the alliance, particularly for professional productions.

Freefly, for its part, is already eyeing more unconventional use cases, suggesting L-Mount lenses could soon find themselves filming everything from rocket launches to wildfire operations.
