DJI has officially unveiled the RS 5, the next generation single-handed gimbal aimed at solo videographers and content creators who want professional grade performance without the bulk of cinema setups.

Building on the RS 4 series, the RS 5 brings a suite of meaningful upgrades including a smarter tracking system, faster charging, refined controls and expanded camera support.

All of this is packed into a compact aluminium alloy chassis.

The new DJI RS 5 weighs 1.46 kg, compared with 1.4 kg for the RS 4, and supports up to 3kg of payload, enough for most mirrorless setups with standard zoom lenses.

It includes Teflon coated fine-tuning knobs on each axis for precise balance adjustments and a new Z-Axis Indicator on the touchscreen that gives real-time feedback to help reduce footstep shake for steadier walking shots.

DJI’s second generation automated axis locks automatically engage when the gimbal powers down and unlock on startup, speeding up set up times.

The BG33 grip uses a modular, detachable battery design and includes expansion ports for RSA, NATO and charging that support seamless accessory integration such as focus motors or control handles.

Tracking, stabilisation and control

At the heart of the RS 5 is DJI’s RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module, which magnetically mounts to the gimbal and streams a live camera feed to the 1.8-inch OLED touchscreen.

Users can tap to track a wide range of subjects, from people to cars, pets or arbitrary objects, from up to 10 metres away, with automatic re-acquisition if subjects leave the frame.

DJI says the RS 5 is powered by a 5th generation stabilisation algorithm that delivers up to 50 percent more peak motor torque than the RS 4. This delivers strong performance during fast movement and vertical orientation shots.

The touchscreen also enables intuitive Bluetooth shutter and zoom control, with expanded wireless camera support for Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras.

The gimbal also features DJI’s third generation native vertical shooting mode, optimising workflows for social content without the need for additional plates or accessories.

New Briefcase Handle and ecosystem support

A new Electronic Briefcase Handle allows comfortable single-handed low-angle control with integrated joystick and buttons, ideal for dynamic shooting angles.

The RS 5 also supports DJI’s broader professional ecosystem through the RSA Communication Port, Focus Pro Motors for focus and zoom control, DJI SDR Transmission for high definition live video feeds, and an open RS SDK for custom development.

The RS 5 ships with DJI’s BG33 battery grip, featuring a modular, detachable battery rated for up to 14 hours of runtime. Using a 65 W Power Delivery charger, it can be fully charged in one hour.

An optional BG70 High Capacity Battery Grip extends runtime to 30 hours, making it ideal for long shoots.

The DJI RS 5 is available now in two configurations:

DJI RS 5 Standard Edition – AUD $839
Includes the gimbal, BG33 battery grip, quick-release plates, tripod and control cable.

DJI RS 5 Combo Kit – AUD $999
Adds the RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module, Electronic Briefcase Handle and a carrying case.
