Adobe launches new Generative Expand tool in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop has a new Generative AI tool - Generative Expand, that allows users to expand and resize any image by clicking and dragging the Crop tool and then 'fill in' the blank space with AI generated content.

The tool is Adobe's latest evolution of its Generative AI tech following May's Photoshop Beta update that introduced Generative Fill.

In the new update, by clicking “Generate” when expanding a canvas to any aspect ratio with the Crop Tool, the new white space is filled with AI generated content that blends with the existing image. 

"Suppose your subject is cut off, your image is not in the aspect ratio you want, or an object in focus is misaligned with other parts of the image --- you can use Generative Expand to expand your canvas and get your image to look like anything you can imagine," Adobe says in its press release.

Generated content can be added with or without a text prompt.

Without a prompt, it's simply a matter of clicking “Generate” in the Contextual Task Bar, and Photoshop will fill in the new white space with generated content that seamlessly blends with the existing image.

When using a prompt, the image will be expanded and will include the content entered into the prompt.

From there, users can select their favourite variation, and the expanded image will be added non-destructively in a new Generative Layer.

Speaking of text prompts, Adobe has also announced that they are now available in 100+ languages, further expanding the reach of this powerful (and still pretty scary) tool.

The new update is available in Photoshop Beta.
