Video: The difference between phase and contrast detect autofocus

Comments Comments

Understanding the different ways our cameras autofocus, along with their relative strengths and weaknesses, is an important one to consider if you are in the market for a new camera.

In a new video for B&H, photographer David Flores breaks down how most cameras will use either phase detection, contrast detection, or a combination of both when autofocussing.

There's a big difference with the different systems. Portrait, landscape, and still life photography tend to be better suited to contrast detection systems, while shooting moving subjects in sports and action photography can be made easier with phase detection.

The key to consider when buying a new camera is to look at the type of photography you plan to do the most of, and buy a camera with an autofocus system that suits it best.
