Video: Watch millions of starlings flying in sync

Captured during the Netherland's relatively warm winter in late 2014 and early 2015, photographer and filmmaker Jan van IJken shot this beautiful short film The Art of Flying. It shows thousands of common starlings flying in swarms, or murmurations.

“It is still unknown how the thousands of birds are able to fly in such dense swarms without colliding,” he says. “Every night the starlings gather at dusk to perform their stunning air show.”

You can watch the full version of the stunning film at Vimeo On Demand, and you can also find more of Van IJken’s images and video work on his website.
