A collection of architectural images by Australian photographer Tom Evangelidis is now showing at the Edmund Pearce Gallery in Melbourne.
Façade, an exhibition of architectural images taken over the last 10 years by Sydney-based photographer Tom Evangelidis, is showing at the Edmund Pearce Gallery in Melbourne from Sept 3 until 27.
Shot in Prague, Bucharest, Hanoi, St Petersburg, Sofia, Istanbul and Havana over a 10-year period, Façade documents an eclectic mix of architectural eras from the Gothic beauty of the 13th century, and the ornate decadence of the 18th century to the austere classicism of the Communist era in the 20th century.
A fashion photographer who previously worked in London, Evangelidis grew up along the northern beaches of Sydney. He made his debut as a fashion photographer in London in the early 1990s, but 12 years ago he shifted his focus to interior design and lifestyle photography. He also travelled the world to pursue his passion for architecture.
The curators say Evangelidis’ work rejects the "candy-coated world of architectural perfection in favour of a style that’s relentlessly honest and unapologetically raw". Evangelidis is fascinated by the evolution of architecture and its intricate links with politics, culture and class. He says he approaches major public installations with the same respect as homes because he believes they’re equally important in documenting the progression and decline of history.
