A new exhibition by leading Australian architectural photographer Brett Boardman will open at the Japan Foundation Gallery in Sydney next week.

Mono no aware: The Poignancy of Things is a unique photographic project that juxtaposes images from two nearby sites in Kyoto, Japan;  the iconic Katsura Rikyu, the 17th century imperial villa known for its beautifully manicured gardens and villas, and a makeshift homeless person's shelter under a nearby bridge.

Captured over a two-hour period in 2011 the series explores ideas of architecture, space, social status, the environment and photography itself.

"The original intent of the Katsura shoot was to see what is possible to photograph in a site that has been extensively documented. The outcome, which included discovering and photographing a nearby homeless person's shelter, raised questions and led me to reevaluate how meaning can be communicated through images," said Boardman.

The exhibition runs from 26 February to 11 April 2015, and coincides with the launch of a limited-edition book of the same name and two talks by Boardman on the making of the series scheduled for March 5 and 6, 2015, from 6-7pm.

The Japan Foundation Gallery is at Level 4, Central Park, 28 Broadway, Chippendale, NSW.
