DPReview thrown lifeline by Gear Patrol

Popular photo gear and tech site DPReview has been acquired by Gear Patrol, putting to end the months of uncertainty over the website's future.

Gear Patrol describes itself as an award-winning publication and content studio dedicated to informing today's generation of consumers about the best products to pursue their lives.

In March it was announced DPReview was to close after 25 years in operation following a decision by parent company Amazon inc to rationalise its holdings.

The tech and retail giant has been affected by a downturn in the tech industry and announced plans to lay off 9,000 staff in March, including the team behind DPReview.

In April it was announced the site's 25 years of content would be archived following a huge outcry in the photo community.

And now it appears the website's future is secure too, with an announcement made yesterday on dpreview.com confirming the acquisition.

According to a Q&A published on DPReview, the site will continue to operate as it was before, with all editorial coverage and site features remaining the same, and all historical content accessible. The company's current core editorial, tech, and business team is also sticking around.

You can see the statement by General Manager Scott Everett, below.

Dear readers,

We’ve heard from many of you over the past several weeks, and we realize there are many questions about what comes next for DPReview. We’re thrilled to share the news that Gear Patrol has acquired DPReview. Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together.

I want to reassure you that we remain firmly committed to what makes DPReview great: the best camera reviews in the business, industry-leading photography news and features, and one of the most active photography communities anywhere on the internet.

This is just the beginning of a new chapter for DPReview and we don’t have all the answers yet, but I’m sharing what we know below and will continue to share information about this change as we get more acquainted with our partners at Gear Patrol.

Thank you for your continued support of our team and legacy. We appreciate it and can't thank you all enough.
