Australia Street exhibition celebrates Sydney's inner west

Comments Comments

Renowned photographer Zahn Pithers lives on Australia Street, which runs from Newtown to Camperdown in Sydney's inner west. The street has inspired Pithers' latest photographic project, “Australia Street – Portraits from the Inner West”, a culmination of two years' work.

Commercially, Pithers has photographed celebrities such as Dame Edna/Barry Humphries, Mel B from the Spice Girls and recently shot a campaign for the Cancer Council featuring elite Australian athletes.

The subjects of his latest project are a "part of the ebb and flow of Australia Street itself", and feature a variety of people from the famous (such as Julian Hamilton from band the Presets) to the local Australia Street fire station master Matt Murphy. Importantly, Pithers has included a culturally diverse range of subjects from photographers to sportsmen and motor mechanics.

The opening date for the exhibition is Saturday September 10, kicking off at 4pm as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival with a street party/art trail opening.

To bring the project to life the works will be exhibited from September 10 to 31. Prints can be viewed inside cafes and shops on Australia Street between the Courthouse Hotel and King Street Newtown. Works can be viewed inside 212 Blu, Continental Deli and Blackstar Pastry. Some prints will also be displayed in the windows of surrounding stores including Stacks of Wax and Drunk on the Moon.

A printed limited edition book to go with the project has also been produced, with a forward by the Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Angus Trumble. To order a copy of the book and see more of the work visit www.australiastreet-com-au.work and www.zahn.net.au
