Hi Lachlan,

Thanks for sending through this photo. I always love looking at images of aircraft! This photo, taken in the La Trobe Valley in Victoria is, I think, of a privately restored Sabre jet from the 1950s. It has recently been restored to flying condition. Here's a big photographic tip though; if ever your partner grumbles about how much you're spending on photography, make the suggestion that you might give up photography and restore a jet aircraft to flying condition instead!

You mentioned in your email that you think there's something missing in this photograph. I think you're correct, but what's missing within it is a third element; something which adds depth to the photograph.

As we look at this for the moment, our eyes peruse the aircraft and then move to the pilot, but after that there's nothing else to look at. What this image needs is an element to both juxtapose the main subject and also to add some depth. While you were making this photograph I would have been looking for two options. The first would be to have found a slightly higher vantage point; you might have been able to include a windsock or similar item into the background.

The other option would be to have gone down low on the ground and include any support staff who might have been looking up the aircraft, too. Either option would have helped supply more information about what was going on with this image, and possibly have added some context.

Hopefully you'll get the chance to see this aircraft fly again in the new future, and also get a chance to try improving on this photograph.

Cheers, Anthony.
