Sony announces A6700 and 70-200mm F4 Macro G lens

Sony has announced the A6700, the latest evolution of its APS-C series of mirrorless cameras, alongside a new 70-200mm G lens.

The new camera, which retails for $2,499, features a 26MP APS-C back-illuminated CMOS image sensor and 4K 120fps video as its standout features.

Inside, the A6700 is powered by a BIONZ XR processing engine, and it's also equipped with an optical 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system. According to Sony, the AI processing unit is inherited from the A7R V, and features the company's Real-Time Recognition AF (autofocus).

Beyond the α6000 series' human and animal recognition, it will also identify subjects such as human, animal, bird, insect, car/train, and airplanes.

The compact body weighs in at 493g, and has a similar form factor to the previous A6000 models and features a touch-operable vari-angle LCD monitor. It also has a dual SD/Type A slot.

Video is downsampled from 6K, and as mentioned includes support for 4K 120fps. In addition, it features S-Log3, and the S-Cinetone picture profile found in Sony’s professional Cinema Line. 

In addition, the body features a Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe compatible with digital audio interfaces, and a newly announced ECM-M1 shotgun microphone with eight sound pickup modes including stereo. CM-M1 shotgun microphone, capable of high-quality sound with eight sound pickup modes including stereo. 

FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II

The FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II is Sony’s 50th full-frame E-mount lens, and, according to the company, the world’s first zoom lens to offer half macro capability throughout the zoom range, with a maximum magnification of 0.5x12 throughout.

The lens is 149mm long and weighs 794g (excluding the tripod mount). Inside, aspherical lenses help improve image quality and ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass suppress chromatic aberration.

It also supports Sony's SEL20TC teleconverter, which, when attached allows for macro shots at up to 1:1.

The A6700 will be available in Australia from August, and will retail for $2,499. The FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II will be available from early August 2023 and will set you back $2,899.
