Canon launches macro lens with built-in light

Comments Comments

Canon has announced the launch of the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM lens.

The maker says its latest lens is the first in the EF-S crop sensor range to feature Canon’s built-in Macro Lite technology.

Compatible with all of Canon's APS-C DSLR cameras, the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM illuminates small objects and close-up detail, minimising the shadows it casts onto subjects with a tapered edge design.

The 35mm macro lens also features image stabilisation via Hybrid IS, which is designed to counteract unwanted shake and blur.

Offering life-size 1.0x magnification, the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM allows photographers to shoot as close as 30mm to subjects. The lens features a seven-blade circular aperture design to produce pleasing bokeh effects and Canon's Super Spectra Coating - claimed to reduce flare and ghosting and help maintain contrast and colour.

Canon says the quiet focusing of the lens' STM focus motor is advantageous for capturing movies without distracting noise, whilst its smooth shifts in focus create cinematic effects.

The physical dimensions of the lens are: 69.2mm (length) and 55.8mm (wide) with approximate weight of 190 grams. Filter size is 49mm.
